Guyana minimum wage
The national minimum wage payable to every employed person in Guyana, fixed by Order of the Minister responsible for labour under section 8 of the Labour Act, Chapter 98:01. The Order states the minimum as four equivalent alternatives — per hour, per day, per week and per month, 'as the case may be' — and applies to all workers, not only those in the sectors listed in its Schedule. It binds the PRIVATE sector; the public-sector minimum is set separately through the national budget and public-sector wage agreements and is materially higher (see notes).

CORRECTION TO THE BRIEF — THE PRIVATE-SECTOR MINIMUM HAS NOT BEEN RAISED RECENTLY. The launching brief said both the private and public minima 'have been raised recently'. Only the public-sector minimum has. The private-sector national minimum wage has been unchanged since 1 July 2022: a full-text search of the Guyana e-Gazette archive for 'minimum wage' at confirmation returned Order No. 20 of 2022 as the most recent minimum wage instrument, with nothing in 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026 to date, and the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning publishes no later Order. Signed by the then Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, M.P., on 24 June 2022; it raised the monthly figure 36 per cent from G$44,200 and was the first increase since 1 January 2017. PUBLIC SECTOR IS A DIFFERENT, HIGHER NUMBER — DO NOT CONFLATE. The Ministry of Finance reports the 'Public Sector Monthly Minimum Wage' as a distinct statistic in Appendix I of the Budget Speech: G$70,000 (2020), G$74,900 (2021), G$80,892 (2022), G$86,150 (2023), G$94,765 (2024) and G$102,346 (2025) — the last after an 8 per cent across-the-board increase paid to public sector employees in 2025 under multi-year agreements concluded in 2024 with the Guyana Public Service Union, Guyana Teachers Union and GAWU (Budget Speech 2026, paras 3.37-3.38; the public sector wage bill reached G$252bn at end-2025 against G$127bn in 2020). The public-sector figure is 70 per cent above the private-sector statutory minimum and is NOT set by any Order under the Labour Act — the widely quoted 'no public servant earns less than $100,000' commitment is a budget/collective-bargaining outcome, not law. TERMS IN THE ORDER: clause 5 protects workers already on a higher rate from reduction; clause 6 fixes the normal work week at forty hours over not more than five days, with hours beyond that paid at not less than the rates in the Factories Act (Cap. 95:02) and the Labour (Conditions of Employment of Certain Workers) Act (Cap. 99:03) or any collective agreement; clause 7 penalises contravention with a fine of G$50,000 for a first offence and G$90,000-100,000 plus one month's imprisonment for a second. The Schedule lists some seventy sectors/categories but clause 4 makes the minimum payable to ALL workers in similar categories, not only those listed.
