Ecuador's 2016 Ley de Feriados (Ley Orgánica reformatoria a la LOSEP y al Código del Trabajo, RO Segundo Suplemento 906, 20 Dec 2016) fixed the national holiday list at 11 obligatory rest days and added observance-shift rules: a holiday falling on Tuesday is observed the preceding Monday; Wednesday or Thursday → the Friday of the same week; Saturday → the preceding Friday; Sunday → the following Monday. Año Nuevo, Carnaval, Viernes Santo and Navidad are never moved. Applied to 2026: only Batalla de Pichincha shifts (Sun 24 May → Mon 25 May); Año Nuevo stays Thu 1 Jan (exempt from shifting); Día del Trabajo (Fri), Primer Grito (Mon), Independencia de Guayaquil (Fri), Difuntos (Mon), Independencia de Cuenca (Tue, already adjacent to the Monday holiday so observed on its own date) and Navidad (Fri) all fall on their statutory dates. EXTRA DAY: Decreto Ejecutivo 249 (17 Dec 2025) suspended the working day of Friday 2 January 2026 nationwide (public and private sector) as a NON-RECOVERABLE rest day attached to the New Year holiday, creating a 1-4 January long weekend — it is included in the array because work on it is treated as holiday work (100% surcharge under the Código del Trabajo). NOT included: local/provincial holidays (each canton also observes its own foundation/independence day, e.g. Quito 6 Dec, Guayaquil 25 Jul — one local holiday per the LOSEP framework). The government typically decrees 8% tourism IVA windows around several of these feriados. Official verification caveat: turismo.gob.ec and trabajo.gob.ec refuse connections from some foreign networks; the calendar above matches the Viceministerio de Turismo's official 2026 calendar as republished verbatim by major Ecuadorian outlets (El Universo, Primicias) and the Decreto 249 text. 2027 EXTENSION (2026-07-30): observed dates computed from the transfer rule inserted into Codigo del Trabajo art. 65 by the Ley Organica Reformatoria published in Registro Oficial Suplemento 906 of 20 December 2016. That rule moves a holiday falling on TUESDAY back to the preceding Monday and one falling on WEDNESDAY or THURSDAY forward to the Friday of the same week (Friday occurrences never move), and separately moves a SATURDAY holiday back to the preceding Friday and a SUNDAY holiday forward to the following Monday - the weekend limb has no exceptions, so it reaches 1 January and 25 December too. The consecutive-holiday rule of the same law governs 2 and 3 November: with the pair falling Tuesday and Wednesday, the Wednesday holiday moves to the preceding Monday and the Tuesday one stays put. Hence Labour Day is observed Friday 30 April, First Cry Monday 9 August, Guayaquil Friday 8 October, Cuenca Monday 1 November and Christmas Friday 24 December. Because 1 January 2028 falls on a Saturday, the same rule puts that rest day on FRIDAY 31 DECEMBER 2027, which is why a 31 December entry appears. NOT INCLUDED: the extra 'puentes vacacionales' the President may add by decreto ejecutivo (2026 had one, an extra 2 January rest day under Decreto Ejecutivo 249); none is decreed for 2027. Verification note: trabajo.gob.ec refused connections and the official 2027 tourism calendar is published only as an image, so these dates are statute-derived and cross-checked against the published summary, which agrees on 30 April, 9 August, 8 October and 1 November.
