The Repo Rate — the rate at which the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago lends overnight to commercial banks against government securities. It is the Bank's signal rate and is set by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and published in a quarterly Monetary Policy Announcement (MPA), issued on the Monetary Policy Announcements Calendar (four scheduled announcements a year: late March, late June, late September, late December).

What this value means

The Repo Rate has been 3.50 per cent continuously since mid-March 2020, when the MPC cut it by an unprecedented 150 basis points (from 5.00 per cent) and simultaneously cut the reserve requirement from 17 to 14 per cent of banks' deposit liabilities as a COVID-19 response. Every scheduled MPA since has been a HOLD, including all four 2025 announcements (28 Mar, 27 Jun, 26 Sep, late Dec 2025) and both 2026 announcements to date (27 Mar 2026 and 26 Jun 2026). The June 2026 MPA cites well-contained domestic inflation, improving system liquidity and continued weakness in the non-energy sector, against global headwinds from the Middle East War (Strait of Hormuz disruption, commodity price spikes) with the IMF cutting its 2026 global growth forecast to 3.1 per cent. Next scheduled announcement: 25 September 2026. TRAPS: (1) the Repo Rate is NOT the Treasury bill rate, the discount rate, or the 'basic prime lending rate' banks publish — those are separate series in the CBTT's price/interest aggregates; (2) the CBTT site's own navigation widget was stale at confirmation, reading 'Repo Rate is 3.50% as at March 2026' three-plus weeks after the 26 June 2026 announcement, and the /core-functions/monetary-policy/repurchase-rate/ page renders its current-rate figure via JavaScript that fetch clients read as 0.00% — do not scrape either; read the dated MPA text instead. DATE NOTE: 17 March 2020 is the date of the MPC decision announced in the March 2020 Monetary Policy Announcement; the CBTT publishes a decision date rather than a separate 'effective from' date.
